Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, two names that are synonymous with the blues and slide guitar. My love for this type of music runs deep in my veins, so I made the pilgrimage to Huntington, WV to witness this greatness in action. The Tedeschi-Trucks band made its way to The Keith-Albee Theater on Tues Feb 28 in support of their newest release in the “ I Am The Moon” series. The opening act of the evening was Jack Broadbent. Hailing from the U.K., Broadbent crossed the pond to jump on a few tour stops. His slide guitar prowess and technique rivaled the masters. He hit the stage with a cover of the Canned Heat Classic “ On the Road Again”, and from there on out dazzled the audience. Songs like “ She Said” and “Grace “ stirred emotions and the audience wanting more. Jack closed his set with a rousing rendition of ” Hit the Road Jack” before graciously thanking the crowd.

The lights go down and the echoes of a slide guitar echo through the venue. The slide guitar prodigy and his blues virtuoso partner hit the stage as the lights come up. The backing band is massive. Along with Tedeschi and Trucks, the band features members Tyler Greenwell, Isaac Eady, Mike Mattison, Mark Rivers, Alecia Chakour, Kebbi Williams, Elizabeth Lea, Ephraim Owens, Brandon Boone and last, but certainly not least Gabe Dixon. This is a group of otherworldly musicians who are mesmerizing and downright hypnotizing at times. Trucks slide driven solos and fretboard acrobats weave in so damn good with Tedeschi’s soulful, bluesy voice. The Husband-Wife duo were on fire that night as they took us on a journey across their vast musical landscape. The evenings openers were “ Hear My Dear” , “Fall In” and “ I Am the Moon” . Every members instrument was merely an extension of their body. They truly make it look that easy. Highlight of the night was when they belted out “ Made Up Mind”. Tedeschi’s vocal work on this song is jaw dropping, there was no auto tune used that night nor has there ever been. We were treated to originals and stellar covers. I say this without regret, but if Tedeschi-Trucks cover your song, well, it isn’t your song anymore as they make it their own. You would be hard pressed to find a tighter band with this many members. Twelve years of touring with sold out nightly shows is a testament to that. The Tedeschi-Trucks Band is a must see act, it’s an experience as well. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a chilled out relaxing evening.
